MSc International Accounting and Finance

Overview

This postgraduate programme is aimed at those who have passed their final professional accountancy examinations with one of the UK’s professional accounting bodies and want to gain competitive advantage by adding a master’s degree to their professional qualification.

Students choosing ARU London's MSc Accounting and Finance have the option of starting in September or January.  The programme takes between 4 and 6 months to successfully complete, depending on when you start, and costs £5,000 for the complete course.

The UK professional accounting bodies are:

  • The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA)

  • The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW)

  • The Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA)

  • The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland (ICAS)

  • The Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA)

The course  comprises two taught modules and a finance-based case study. One of the two taught modules will extend previously acquired finance knowledge whilst the other paper will seek to place accounting in a wider organisational and strategic context.

Students must select:

  • one finance module,

  • one non finance module, and

  • a finance based major project.

ARU London staff will advise students on the modules available.

Structure and content

The course is comprised of two taught papers and a finance-based case study. One of the two taught papers will extend previously acquired finance knowledge whilst the other paper will seek to place accounting in a wider organisational and strategic context.

Teaching and assessment

Rather than the traditional end-of course dissertation, the MSc has, as its pinnacle, a real-world case study. The case study, with a strong accounting and finance focus, is given to students approximately two months before the end of the course. Students spend time researching the organisation prior to the exam.

Students are allowed to bring their research on the organisation for reference into the examination. Students are assessed on the examination, plus previous research which is submitted with the exam script. It is our view that the analysis of an organisation provides an opportunity for students to draw on knowledge and experience gained from previous studies and to demonstrate their ability to cope with incomplete information in a way that reflects situations likely to be faced in their subsequent careers.
