The Big Pitch - Aaron's Slam Dunk!

The Entrepreneur Society had the opportunity to join Anglia Ruskin’s ‘Big Pitch’ competition, which spanned our 3 campuses; London, Cambridge and Chelmsford. The competition tests students on their ability to create business start-ups.

The London campus had an array of students, at all levels of their degree programme that entered Round One of the competition and uploaded a 1 minute video ‘elevator pitch’. This first round attracted over 50 entries, which was cut to 25 for Round Two. Round Two included a high-intensity ‘enterprise boot-camp’ where entrants received training in creativity, business planning, financial forecasting, market identification and presentation techniques delivered by business professionals and academics. The competitors then presented a closed-pitch to a panel of entrepreneurial experts and six students were selected to pitch in the Final.

The Final was a demanding event with six individuals pitching for a pot of £10,000 and a range of social enterprise awards. Representing the London campus was Aaron Campbell a marketing student who wishes to launch ‘B-Ballers UK’, a social basketball network that will keep the UK basketball community connected and informed. After a tough 4 hours of presentations and questions followed by  much debate from the judges we are delighted to confirm that Aaron’s efforts paid dividends and he was awarded £1,000 to assist with his start-up business.

Well done, Aaron! ARUL wish you every success in your business venture.

Top Achiever's Scholarship

Each year ARU London offers scholarships to continuing students who have shown a level of dedication to their studies above and beyond what is expected. These students achieve academic success whilst here at university, which often leads to professional success in their career after graduation.

This year ARUL is happy to announce 3 winners of the Top Achiever’s Scholarship and have all received £2,000 off their tuition fee for the subsequent year of study. Congratulations to;

  • Denitsa Zhekova – BSc (Hons) Finance and Accounting.

    • Denitsa is progressing into her second year with outstanding grades having achieved a 97 & 93 in two modules, a remarkable achievement

  • Gavin Wood – BSc (Hons) International Business Management.

    • Gavin is also progressing into the second year having collected prizes for two modules at the Top Achiever's event and securing a 1st Class average.

  • Svetlana Kaminskiene – LLB (Hons) Law.

    • Svetlana is progressing with an astonishing academic record having achieved top marks across all of her modules; her hard work and focus are evident in such consistent and strong results.

All three winners were able to give us an insight into what has been a very tough but rewarding year. Denitsa said “my university experience so far has been very interesting and challenging at the same time. I have learned so many new things in such a short period of time. I am still discovering all the opportunities that ARU offers me. I was incredibly excited to hear that I was selected to receive a Scholarship. I am very thankful for the recognition of my efforts. This motivates me to keep improving my performance as a student.”

Gavin gave thanks to many of his lecturers and highlighted the importance of working hard to reap the rewards; “Being awarded one of this year's scholarships at Anglia Ruskin London was a real surprise. I feel fortunate to have had the lecturers that I had, Kelly Strong, Kevin O'Hara, Tim Price and Mark Cleary and everyone else in the team through year 1 of the degree. As for any advice for new year 1 students; the more time you put in, and it's just as important to get as much feedback as you can every step of the way, the better the chances are of producing something that might make sense."

Svetlana had equally inspiring words “Studying at ARU London gave me a possibility to develop my skills which are essential for the UK market. Also, I made many new friends from different countries that helped me to learn more about their culture and mentality. I feel very positively inspired by my lecturers, some of them are absolutely incredible and every single one of their lessons was fun. Regarding my awards, it was a very unexpected surprise for me, when I heard my name I was absolutely speechless and even now I do not remember the minute I stood up and went to our principal to take my award. I did not feel that I was a top achiever; i just did my best and enjoyed that.”

ARUL would like to thank Denitsa, Gavin and Svetlana for their kind words and would like to congratulate all the winners for their outstanding achievement. We have no doubt that their ambition to succeed will continue to grow and we hope to feature their names again next year.
